Chess (K-6th)

Learn chess with Magnus Academy (formerly Silver Knights), world champion Magnus Carlsen’s academy!  We’ve taught 100,000 children to play including state and national champions, but most students are beginners looking to learn a new skill and have FUN. Class time is divided between lessons and practice games.  Lessons range from the basic rules to advanced tournament strategies. Students will have the opportunity to play in tournaments (in-person and online) outside of club time.  This in-person club includes free online extras including weekly practice tournaments and an event with world champion Magnus Carlsen or Judit Polgar, the best female chess player of all time.  All chess supplies provided. Spanish for Kids (K-4th)

Spanish for Kids"" is an after-school program designed for boys and girls in grades K to 5 who are interested in learning to speak Spanish. In this program, students will develop communication skills that will enable them to introduce themselves, talk about their preferences, likes, and dislikes, express simple needs, and answer questions. They will also learn to talk about their family members and friends. Throughout the class, instructors will engage the kids in super fun activities such as singing, dancing, playing, and immersing themselves in the Spanish language. To enhance your kids' experience of learning Spanish, they will be able to practice each topic on our new platform, IXL. Through fun and interactive activities, they can reinforce each lesson learned during the after-school class. IXL lays the foundation for Spanish fluency with interactive questions, engaging audio, and real-world narratives that put a fresh spin on vocabulary and grammar skills.

 

Skills & Creativity with LEGO Bricks: DC Landmarks (K-6th)

Explore your creativity by building some of the most famous buildings in the Washington DC Metro area. Explore the White House, the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument. Pick out the best parts of each structure and create them using LEGO® bricks. Learn to use pieces in unconventional ways while building great masterpieces. Meet the challenges presented each day while placing your own creative stamp on them. This isn’t about following LEGO® instruction booklets, it’s about building awesome creations and sharing them with friends.

 

Glow in the Dark Art with Kidcreate (K-5th)

These projects will ROCK your child’s world long after the lights go out at night. You guessed it, all the project we create in this camp will glow-in-the-dark! How cool is that?!?!?! We will be working with a variety of different art supplies including clay, paint and other luminescent materials to create masterpieces your child will be ready to show off in the dark!

Scratch Jr. Coding (K-2nd)

Scratch Jr is a visual programming language specifically designed for young children. In this course, children will use Scratch Jr to create interactive stories, games, and animations by dragging and dropping blocks to specify the actions of their program. In this course, children will have the opportunity to create their own narrated stories. In addition to using audio recordings, children will also learn how to use loops to repeat actions, control structures to make decisions, and variables to store and manipulate data. By the end of this course, children will have the skills to create their own interactive programs in Scratch Jr and be well on their way to becoming coding experts. Scratch Jr is a fun and engaging way for young children to learn the basics of coding in a safe and supportive environment.

 

Science: Potions & Explosions! (1st-5th)

Let’s have fun with Chemistry! In this program, we will create “magic” potions and exciting chemical reactions that will blow your mind. Erupt a volcano, make indoor snow, grow crystals, blast a rocket into the air, and more. We will learn about the states of matter and how things change with mixtures, solutions and chemical reactions. Join us to channel your inner Professor Snape!

 

ACT Up! Pop Star Spotlight  (2nd-6th)

In this Moonlit Wings class, kids channel their favorite pop stars like Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, Dua Lipa, Harry Styles, and the Jonas Brothers. Take center stage, sing and dance to your favorite radio hits, and act in original scenes/skits. Young performers also enjoy improvisation games, character creation, and a talent show. Parents are invited to a mini-performance during the final class. Plus, weekly surprises and new songs and scenes each season for an ongoing journey of fun!

 

Pin it for Fun (K-3rd)

This class is fun, fun, fun!!! This class was created for the students that are into the DIY culture. We will work with various levels and forms of arts and crafts inspired by Pinterest. This class offers a seasonal curriculum. The arts and crafts in this class will always align with the Holidays, seasons and big events going on around the time of the class. Students can create a holiday wreath for the fall, a heart canvas bag for Valentine's Day, and even abstract rainbows to bring in the summer. This is actually one of our more popular classes. This class can be offered to every age group. This class allows the children to be completely creative in their own way and also be social.
